Information on Acceptance and Commitment Therapy: Foundational Knowledge and Skills

Shurmatz Counseling LCSW PC is excited to introduce Therapists Helping and Nourishing Knowledge Sharing (THANKS).

Shurmatz Counseling has a goal of all therapists in Western New York offering effective mental health care.  With the foundational understanding that accessibility is a social justice issue, Shurmatz Counseling has developed an innovative and exciting program designed with accessibility at its core.  Specifically, the cost of training directly impacts the likely attendees, and the greater community’s access to them.   The cost of a THANKS training workshop will be a donation to a selected 503c not for profit, to be selected monthly by the team at Shuramtz Counseling.   CEUs are available for a fee of 10.00 for 3 CEUs.  No partial credit will be awarded.  Unless indicated otherwise, workshops are appropriate for social workers, mental health counselors, substance use counselors, psychologists, and graduate students in clinically oriented behavioral health programs.

The pilot training for THANKS will be on December 5, 2020, from 9am-12:15pm on Zoom.  The topic is Acceptance and Commitment Therapy:Foundational Knowledge and Skills.  3 CEUS are available for mental health counselors and social workers.  The chosen not for profit for this training is FeedMore WNY.   Monetary donations can be sent to FeedMore WNY.  Please select ‘give on behalf of an organization’ and enter Shurmatz Counseling LCSW PC.  Please complete the registration form and contact [email protected] with any questions.

Sponsorships

Shurmatz Counseling is asking for not for profits to be nominated for sponsorship for THANKS.  If you know of a 503c not for profit organization who could use donations, please consider nominating them!  Preference may be given to not for profits that are locally based, and offer direct services to community members in the Western New York area.  Please send this nomination form to Shurmatz Counseling at [email protected].

How we help you excel

We offer individual and couples counseling to people who are ready to see changes happen in their life.  Therapy can be like an aspirin, a short term treatment to relieve pain and other symptoms.  Therapy can also be like a vitamin, used to promote health and wellness.  With the philosophy that people deserve effective and efficient mental health care that doesn’t just feel like one more thing you have to do, we strive to offer convenient hours, modalities (Telehealth and office appointments)  and insurance coverage.  The therapists at Shurmatz Counseling have decades of experience in the helping profession, are subject matter experts on trauma, anxiety, performance enhancement, grief and domestic violence.  All treatment is confidential, comfortable and respectful.

Anxiety Disorders

Anxiety occurs on a spectrum, and can include everything from chronic worrying and overthinking, to phobias to compulsive patterns that are negatively impacting you or your loved ones.

Chronic Pain and Illness

Chronic pain and chronic illness can send shock waves through a person.  Do you feel like a shell of the person you once were, before your life was hijacked by pain or a medical condition?

Depressive Disorders

Do you feel like a dark cloud is always hovering above you, like something will make it so you can never feel joy again?  Depression often makes people feel hopeless and helpless, but you should know that it is a treatable medical condition.  You do not have to continue to feel like you are wading through wet cement alone.

Domestic Violence

Domestic violence and family conflict often occur in secret, behind closed doors.  You do not have to continue to keep the secret; a different life is possible for you and your children.  If you feel you are in immediate danger, please call 911 or Haven House at 716-884-6000.

Grief & Loss

Were you not ready to say goodbye?  When someone we care about is no longer here, the waves of grief can feel like they will drown you at any moment.  Counseling can provide critical skills and a safe place to process through the feelings you’re carrying about the loss of your loved one.

Life Transitions

Life happens on life’s terms.   Stress makes everything feel more intense.  Are you struggle to adjust to losing a job, starting a business, starting a new job, getting married, getting divorced or a child growing up?   These are just a few of the life transitions that counseling can help with!

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder

Surviving a painful life event can feel like a life sentence.  Are there events in your past that are ruining your present?  PTSD is a treatable condition; people recover from it every day.  Specific interventions like EMDR and progressive counting can drastically improve the quality of life for trauma survivors.

What patients like to know

Frequently Asked Questions

Human beings do not like surprises.  We really like to have some idea of what something new might be like.  If you have any questions that are not addressed below, please feel free to email or call us!

How do I know when it's time to get support?

I think people often know when they need help.  If you or someone you care about is suffering, therapy can be a transformational process.  Some people use therapy the way we use an aspirin, to address an acute problem that is causing pain.  Other people use therapy like a vitamin, to assist in overall health and wellness.

How long do therapy sessions last?

A standard therapy appointment is between 53 and 60 minutes.  The length of a treatment episode is related to a number of variables, including severity of symptoms and goals of treatment.

Will my appointments be covered by my insurance?

Counseling is covered by the vast majority of insurance plans.  If you have specific questions about your coverage, including co-payments or deductible amounts, we ask that you contact your insurance carrier.

What type of therapy is offered?

We offer individual therapy, couples counseling and family counseling.  Individual counseling can include a variety of interventions, including ACT, CBT, DBT, EMDR, internal family systems, mindfulness based stress reduction, and schema therapy.

Couples counseling includes the Gottman method and Emotionally focused therapy.

What happens if I can't make my appointment?

Shurmatz Counseling requires 24 hours notice to change or cancel an appointment in order to avoid a late cancellation charge.

What therapist will I be meeting with?

Shurmatz Counseling has several therapists who have different specializations.  We do our best to link clients with a therapist who specializes in the area the client is looking to work on.  Please note that not all therapists at Shurmatz Counseling are able to bill all insurance plans.
